The ADF to civilian resume: translate without hollowing out
Over-translation loses the achievement. Under-translation loses the reader. The middle path for veterans writing for APS, defence industry and civilian employers.
Veteran resumes fail in two opposite directions. Under-translation keeps the acronyms and assumes the reader knows what a JNCO on a readiness cycle does; the civilian recruiter does not, and files you under unclear. Over-translation sands everything down to teamwork and communication skills; now you sound like every graduate, except older. The fix is translating scope while keeping the substance.
Rank is not a job title. Scope is the story.
A Petty Officer or Sergeant does not become middle manager. They become the person who led eight technicians, held maintenance sign-off authority, and delivered 96% availability on a fleet the size of a small company's entire asset register. Numbers of people, value of assets, tempo of operations: those translate perfectly, because every employer prices them.
Write for the destination
APS readers reward frameworks and delegations, so map your evidence toward judgement, accountability and stakeholder language, and expect clearance eligibility to carry weight when a role asks for it. Defence industry readers speak both languages; keep more of the technical register or you will sound hollowed out. Pure civilian readers need every acronym gone and every outcome in commercial terms.
Three habits that fix most drafts
- Expand your own jargon out loud: if a sentence needs a serving member to decode it, rewrite it.
- Lead every role with the scale: people, assets, budget, tempo.
- Treat your clearance as need-to-know even in a job hunt. PSPF Release 2026 Requirement 0050 prohibits publicising it on online platforms, so it never appears on LinkedIn, and in application documents you state eligibility only where the role requires it.
Our free rank and role translator gives you the starting frame for your band, and the veterans service, with its 20% discount, does the full translation person by person.
